Final transition visit and parents meeting - postponed
Mon 18 Jul 2022Sadly, due to the extreme weather alerts that are in place currently, we have had to make the difficult decision to postpone the final transition visit for our new Foundation classes. We feel that the classrooms and hall will be too hot for anyone to spend a long period of time in and as always, the safety of our staff, children and parents is our main priority. The two transition visits last week were very well attended and we feel the children will settle into school positively in September following these visits.
We will hold an information meeting for parents in the first week in September to ensure you have all the information you need to be able to fully support your child during their first year with us. We will also email out some key information to all parents before the end of this week with ideas and suggestions for how you can make sure your child is school ready in September.
In the meantime, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Sitwell Summer Reading Challenge
Fri 15 Jul 2022Sitwell Summer Reading Challenge
As well as the Library Summer Reading Challenge, we will also be running our own Sitwell Summer Reading Challenge, and we are asking children to complete a little booklet with a review of six books they have read in the holidays. If you are completing the Library challenge you can just use the same books for our challenge as well or you could read even more books and put those in your booklet from school!
All children in Year 1 and F2 will come home today with a booklet to log their reading over the holidays. Mrs Razaq and Mrs Green will be leading an assembly this afternoon to tell them all about the Library Challenge and our own Sitwell School challenge. Once your booklet is complete, we want the children to bring it back to school on Monday 5th September and they will all be put into a prize draw with several very special prizes on offer.
As a special treat in September, the wonderful author Steve Smallman is returning to our school and he is going to be working with the children to design some special murals which Steve is then going to paint on our corridors!! We are very excited about this and cannot wait to see the children's ideas come to life!
We hope you enjoy the challenge! Please speak to your child's class teacher if you have any questions.

Predicted Extreme Heat Weather Warnings
Fri 15 Jul 2022We know that many of you will be concerned about the predicted heat weather warnings that are in place for Monday and Tuesday next week. We want to reassure you that we are following the government guidance for looking after children during heatwaves to ensure we are able to keep them as hydrated and cool as possible during the day.
Please ensure your child comes to school in sun screen and with a hat to protect them if they do go outside during the day. We will consider the temperature before playtimes and lunchtimes and if it is too hot, the children will not go outside for long periods of time. There is no PE sessions planned for next week either. We are more than happy if you want to send your child to school in lighter clothes (not uniform) next week.
Currently, the government are NOT advising schools to close. If this does change in the future, we will keep you informed through the school app and via email.
Thank you.

Library Summer Reading Challenge
Fri 15 Jul 2022Library Summer Reading Challenge!
The Summer Reading Challenge is the UK’s biggest free reading for pleasure programme for children. The Challenge encourages children aged 4 to 11 to keep reading during the summer holidays. All you have to do is become a member of your local library to loan books during the summer holidays or join the challenge online!
This year's theme is Gadgeteers! Each year, the Summer Reading Challenge has a new theme. This year, they’ve teamed up with the Science Museum Group to create ‘Gadgeteers’, a Challenge that’s all about science and innovation! The ‘Gadgeteers’ materials feature six brand-new fictional characters. The Challenge will invite children to join these characters in using their curiosity and imagination to understand the science behind a whole range of interests, from fashion and technology to cooking and music
How can children take part in the Challenge?
The Summer Reading Challenge is a flexible programme that is designed for all levels of ability.
At the library
1. A child will visit their local library and sign up to the Challenge for free. They receive their Gadgeteers core pack poster. 2. They set a personal reading goal for the summer (we recommend six books).
3. Borrow and read books, eBooks and audiobooks of their choice. They can read anything they like: fiction, fact books, poetry, joke books, picture books, graphic novels, audiobooks…
4. Collect special incentives from the library each time they finish a book.
5. Receive a certificate and/or medal for taking part, or for reaching their Challenge goal.
In addition, libraries offer a wide variety of events and activities for families to enjoy throughout the summer (see the attached poster below for events at Wickersley Library during the summer).
Online
Alternatively, children can participate in the Challenge online.
1. Sign up at www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk
2. Set a personal reading goal for the summer. Receive book recommendations and tips for accessing books for free at home.
3. Each time they finish a book, the child adds it to their online profile and leaves a review. They unlock digital badges and online rewards along the way.
4. Unlock a certificate for reaching their Challenge goal. Children can also play games, enter competitions, share book recommendations and more on our free, safe, moderated platform.
The Summer Reading Challenge is open to all primary school-aged children. The 2022 Challenge launched on Saturday 9th July in England and Wales.
Please take part this summer with your children to encourage them to continue their reading journey, even when school isn't open!

Jubilee tea towel orders
Fri 01 Jul 2022We are now finalising our design for our jubilee tea towel and will be placing orders next week. We will set a new payment up for everyone on School Money to purchase a tea towel. Unfortunately, they will not be returned to school until after the summer holiday. We will hand them out in September to everyone who places an order. If your child is in Year 2 and is moving to the Junior School, we will pass your order onto the Junior School in September.
All orders MUST be placed by Friday 8th July as we will only be ordering the set amount requested by parents. We will not be able to add further requests after this date. Please let us know if you have any questions about this. Thank you.
