Geography
Intent At Sitwell Infant School we believe that Geography helps to provoke and provide answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world. Children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their place in it. The geography curriculum enables children to develop knowledge and skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas. Geography is, by nature, an investigative subject, which develops and understanding of concepts, knowledge and skills. We seek to inspire in children awe and wonder about the world and its people which will remain with them to promote the children’s interest and understanding of diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments. The curriculum is designed in a cross curricular way to develop knowledge and skills that are progressive, as well as transferable.
Implementation Geography at Sitwell infant schools is taught in blocks throughout the year and is cross curricular linked to the topic. It is progressive on a 2 year cycle in KS1 so that children can achieve depth in their learning. Geography leader writes medium term plans after identifying the key knowledge and skills of each blocked topic and consideration has been given to ensure progression across topics throughout each year group across the school. At Sitwell Infant School, we enable children to learn through experience in practical and fieldwork activities such as educational visits and utilising the local area. This should enable children to become curious and ask questions about the world around them. Children will be taught high-quality geographical skills to engage, inspire and challenge them. Close consideration is given to continuous provision activities where the children can deepen their understanding and independently take control of their own learning
Impact Children will develop their knowledge about the world, the UK and their locality. They will understand subject specific vocabulary relating to human and physical geography and begin to use geographical skills, including first- hand experience and observation, to enhance their locational awareness As children progress throughout the school, they develop a deep knowledge, understanding an appreciation of their local area and its place within the wider geographical context. Regular school visits provide further relevant and contextual learning. |
